ABOUT THE ARMIES: We draw from a "deck of armies" consisting of 72 different 500-point armies that were in turn composed using a pseudo-random process involving another deck of cards, so these represent our very intentional efforts to avoid the kind of optimal drafts you might see at tournaments or among very competitive players.

Army 1 -- Matthew (me)
Brave Arrow (50)
Mohican River Tribe x2 (140)
Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (80)
Sharwin Wildborn(110)
Venoc Warlord (120)

Army 2 -- Cathy
Airborne Elite (110)
Captain America (220)
Marro Warriors (50)
Torin (120)

The Map
This is a lightly hacked version of the Watchtowers of Lonely Canyon by heroscapers.com user Nooblar:

I added four random glyphs on the lower level and four treasure glyphs on the upper level. I also substituted large trees for elevated bits of terrain, making it somewhat more difficult to harass figures in their starting zones from height.

Raelin takes position
The Airborne Elite do not materialize for the first round, much to our relief. Since Raelin is the only flyer on the board, she risks a bold position on the bridge, casting her protective aura over the entire area between the walls. We hope a subsequent charge by the Mohicans will prevent her from being too much of a target of our opponent's range, although Captain America admittedly makes us nervous.

Cap turns a glyph
Captain America, however, decides to go "swamp side" and uncover a glyph. It turns out to be a Glyph of Thorian. Is this worth the trouble?

Mohicans spread out
Taking advantage of their speed (thanks to the Venoc Warlord's Scout enhancement), we decide to go for Glyphs instead of a concentrated charge into the center. A mistake? We claim a range glyph between the walls and a +1 defense Glyph "swamp side" (opposite Capt. America). A third tribesman begins to ascend the ladder, trying to prepare for the possibility of the Airborne claiming a position on top.

Marro on the move
The Marro move in and start firing on our positions in the center. Raelin takes some hits on top, but our tribesman on the range glyph perseveres.

Charge of the Mohicans
Our tribesmen finally begin to arrive in force. One hidden glyph remains for whomever can take it first and hold it...

A change in plans
Capt. America withdraws and begins to ascend the other ladder.

Heavy Marro losses
The Mohican charge could not have gone better! We claim a +1 common attack glyph -- perfect! The Marro force is reduced to a single warrior. Even Torin turns out to be no match for the tribesman, who are able to get the jump on him and cut him down with breathtaking efficiency.

The Warlord creeps up
Our luck is holding and the Airborne continue to be no-shows, but we aren't trusting our luck. The Venoc Warlord has been on the move and arrives just in time to counter Cap's ascent to the upper level.

Cap gets a new toy
Cap darts over and claims a nearby treasure glyph -- Bracers of Teleportation! From this position he also now has decent position for launching his shield at dismayed foes.

Behind you!!
Turns out a 10-space teleportation is good enough to get him to the treasure glyph on the opposite side -- a Brooch of Shielding (permanent disengage ability).

Major disruption
...and Raelin is the first major casualty of Capt. America's shield. Down goes a tribesman as well. What are we going to do about this guy?

Showdown
The Venoc Warlord goes down all too quickly, the Mohicans take heavy losses trying to close in. Brave Arrow steps forth, true to his name, as he seems hopelessly outmatched by the barely bruised superhero.

The shield-thumping of Sharwin
Cap's disengagement power turns out to be quite useful, allowing him to maneuver into position to cause maximum havoc with his shield. Sharwin falls all too quickly.

Last chance?
Brave Arrow risks a disengagement to grab height on his foe. He takes a wound, but manages to land a solid blow against the Avenger! Perhaps one more lucky blow...?

The hammer falls!
But it's not to be! The Airborne finally arrive. Where there was previously but scant home, now there is certainly none.

The victors!
Cathy avenges her loss at the Tarns and the [cheese]Battle of All Time[/cheese] rages on!

Some thoughts...

The Mohican/Brave Arrow "pod" is tricky to deploy correctly. I was never able to wring any turn economy out of the "War Cry" power, which was a little frustrating. You need to have two or more of your tribesmen engaged after they are done attacking, and I was too successful with my attacks. I was actually hoping Torin would survive my first strikes against him just so that I could see Brave Arrow get an extra turn out of it!

For most of the game, I felt pretty outmatched, despite my unqualified successes against the Marro Warriors and Torin and my ability to control the power glyphs. Had the Airborne deployed early, this session would probably not have been worth reporting on. It turned out to be a fun game, however, and I did have a chance to take out Captain America before my luck ran out in the end.
