Not sure how you're firing it, but I've had success stacking them on top of each other, holding the top one from the sides from behind the arm, and using that to pull back the arm. It can be useful because you're getting two discs for the price of one if you're firing at pretty intact, wide castle wall or maybe into a grouping of warriors.
It's true that her effect is somewhat obviated by the trebuchet. The tactics cards were designed to work in the box proper. As I said above, mercenaries are useful to move to the front lines for closer shots since they don't count towards the loss condition.
