Yes! It was a bit of a compromise, but mass-market products really bring the price down. They are the mini balloon lights you can find on Amazon:

They are tiny (like .5" round), and so far I've found them to last over 24 hours - so several game plays if you put the plastic tab back in.
I've actually played with so many LEDs now...I've used Lilypad coin battery holders soldered to LEDs, other coin holders, balloon lights...seems like I need to use the right one for the project. Soldering is the way to go if you want LEDs that flicker or fade/breath. These LEDs unfortunately are always-on, but that's fine since they are less work and less cost.
