I remember feeling the same last time I played through this. I hope legacy games stop doing scratchers.
As I recall, scratching off LD-34 allows you to use the Virologist role once you draw it from the Legacy Deck later, and gives you a red icon (the "gene sequence") that matches a checklist on LD-39.
I'm not aware of anything that gives full wordings, but I haven't gone looking lately.
