One more small point I would like to make... it was claimed that "it was a working system". The system did not work very well when a random experienced player in a tournament met a random kid that just got the game and he plays with something lame to completely demolish his opponent. HeroScape was trying to be two things simultaneously that were very difficult to balance. Failure to do so led to risk of isolating and breaking the other, so the balance was important. Those two things were appeal to collectors and appeal to gamers. It did both well, but where it failed is what drives so many from both groups to other pages on BGG usually with a more limited range of miniatures. HeroScape WAS the game to get people into making customs for their own minis, almost regardless of the scale of those minis. Any hex system should work, and it helps if they stack and click, but the terrain colors need to make more sense if they are going to matter for unit cost. Swamp water is easier to move through than a shallow creek? Balloney. What should have counted as cover often didn't matter because some scope-nerd wanted to argue over whether his perfectly sculpted sniper idol could see for his extreme range and your pinky that was on a raised sword of a katana was "within my line of sight". Range and movement was mishandled, which led to extreme imbalance in competitiveness.
