I came to the Risk family of games from a slightly different angle: As a kid I played games like Aggravation and Mille Bornes. When I got to high school I was introduced to Diplomacy then progressed to games like PanzerBlitz and eventually ended up playing many games of Rise and Decline of the Third Reich. This was all before I ever even saw Risk being played. That said, please forgive me if I saw the original Risk as a huge step backwards. I Honestly had no interest in ever playing it and avoided it whenever possible. That said, Risk 2210 A.D. was the first version I wanted to play. I has so much more depth, more going on, and - very importantly to me at the time - a limited number of turns. After my first play I was hooked and immediately went out and bought my own copy. Amusingly my own copy (big box version) has never been played because we always ended up playing with someone else's copy. Nowadays we have so many games we want to play and old favourites seem to have been forgotten (even the more recent Small World hasn't been played in a long time). Still, one of these days this will have to be brought out and played again.
