A minor update: We recently played scenario 3 and lost a battle tile on the very first turn. There's very little we could have done, and in that scenario two lost tiles = game over.

We got lucky, though, and eventually crawled to a win by holding back the dragon army, lasting through all key events, and defeating 13 vile champions. But we were close to an auto-loss the entire game.

We could have been defeated on turn 2 or 3, but thankfully it didn't turn out that way.

One possible variant would be to skip drawing event cards the first few turns and instead have skirmishes on the active flank. That might allow you to put heroes into position to soak up battle damage, etc., to prevent an insta-loss from all-out activations.
