BTW: I do understand why the rule is there: I have seen people play it so they put the chopper right in front of a car that can only coast on the one and only place the car could go. So even if the chopper misses the car will be eliminated as soon as it has to coast (since coasting is mandatory, right?)

That's a different issue. OP was asking if a chopper can shoot in the reverse direction relative to the road and cars. All the rules say about chopper placements is that they go "on any empty space on the board (a space with no obstacles)."

I am the OP... and I did think of a similar scenario when asking the question.
That's why the restriction in the official FAQ thread here on BGG makes a lot of sense to me.

Serves me right for posting from my phone! 😆

What restriction are you talking about? I didn't see anything listed on https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3092687/collection-official... .

The FAQ answer about choppers has this link in it: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3084664/chopper-placement

That covers the "any space without plastic or cardboard," but I didn't see a prohibition on placing a chopper directly in front of a car that will be forced to coast onto that space. I had the impression that's what Klaus was talking about in his follow-up post.
