It's worth getting season 1. The modular mix of scenario/old one means that you'll get added use (combinations) out of having both.
BTW I've not seen reviews saying Season 3 makes the previous ones obsolete (maybe because I knew I'd be getting it so have avoided reviews), but look at the reviews and ratings for season 1. Even if season 3 is much better, season 1 is pretty widely accepted to be a decent and enjoyable game.

I definitely agree with this. Also, they're not including Cthulhu in the new boxes so if you want Cthulhu and Hastur, you'll want the base. Being a modular game, it will all be interchangeable so you'll have even more options. Suggesting it to be obsolete is like saying season 2 of Final Girl makes Season 1 obsolete.
Season 3 is configured as a stand-alone game, which is probably the source of the confusion here. But the components are interchangeable; the plastic tokens come in 5 new colors, making it possible to deploy more than 5 Investigators. And the episodes are key items in terms of replayability! Do not ignore Season 2 (and 4 when it arrives) which exist to increase the episode count! Every box 1 through 4 provides different monsters for the different episodes, both the cool minis and also the AI cards that activate them.
You will NOT want to miss owning Cthulhu and Hastur -- they are so basic to the whole Mythos that we are not talking mere FOMO; buy Season 1 now! And 2, and the Goat & Yog.
