I've always been interested in this game but stayed away due to the potential cost and storage of the game. I came across 2 sets of ROTV and 1 marro base set, plus one character expansion on Craigslist for a decent price, so I made the leap.

I originally worried I wouldn't like the crossing of different genres, but now see that is part of its charm. My intention was to get this set up and played with my 8 year old daughter. So following advice on here I went to heroscapers.com and found a map using two of my sets and started building. With my daughters help I had a beautiful map built in about 45 minutes. This was all done before I had even sat down to read the rules. Long story short I grabbed two 300 point prebuilt armies and let my daughter pick which army she wanted, we had a blast!

I'm so glad I picked this game up, my daughter can't wait to play again and I think some of my regular gaming friends will enjoy it too. The only negative is the desire to buy more terrain and characters has already hit and I know I'll be dropping more money on this in the long run. Over all a great game and a hit with my daughter.

Get your girl into the "Advanced" rules (they're not that advanced, don't worry) and building her own teams as soon as she's able. You will both find that the fun increases to a crazy amount once you do.

Interesting that you bought two ROTV before even trying the game or having other expansions. But a smart move too, since you'd want the land eventually. I'd suggest selling the extra unique figures from the second ROTV set...there is a market for such things sometimes. Use the cash to start saving up and searching for two of the common Orcs pack from Wave I....it will go well with your ROTV set and introduce you to an easy to run common army. After that, try to build your collection in what I refer to as "closed sets." That is, try not to buy heroes or squads whose powers only refer to things you don't own. Doing this will mean you can always use your units to the fullest without constantly being reminded that you need to go buy something else to use that guy's power effectively. So for example, don't buy a unit with Gorillinator Bonding if you don't have Gorillinators. You can see every official unit's card on the internet, so check them out in advance.

When playing with kids especially, the large hero packs are a blast. Big dragons, robots, etc....pure toy joy.
