Fast forward to Feb2013.I wanted to say the foamy landscape did not work that well in the end. Static electricity between the counters and the board made for some jumpy counters. But I have long since got rid of that idea. By mistake I found a better way.
I would make a nice normal hex map with color to print on normal cardstock paper. Then I would make 3 more to have a larger area. I printed it. I rolled clear drawer liner on it. I cut out the edges so they are serrated to align with the hexes edges.
Then I hooked those separate pages together. I just used a tiny bit of clear tape. From there, I took out a dry erase marker and just drew my heights and other landscapy thinga-ma-bobs.
It worked nice. It allowed me to have a 22 by 16 inch layout. After the game I had to be careful on removing the tape. It needs to be rolled away instead of just pulled.
So to recap my ramble: used cardstock, clear paper liner, and a bitmap..map. to make board. I used clear tape to connect many pieces of it for the game.
Oh...and I used pictures from past conventions to get and idea on what layout to make.
