Risk:2210 is a solid game. Much, much better than standard Risk. Having a currency, leaders, cards, etc all add up to something that's deeper and more fun than the original. That said, Risk Legacy is the better choice of the two. Not just from game mechanics. In fact when you first start out, its not much different than the other new Risk versions that come with goals like taking over a couple of other cities to win. The games are typically much shorter than in 2210.
What makes Risk Legacy so great is the unraveling story. The changing world and how it makes you want to play another just to see what happens next.
I don't have many really geeky friends, and our group has never been much for role-playing games. Legacy lets us keep a story going. Let's us keep trash talking between games. It has us laughing about the names we've given areas we've won. We remember the previous games because the scars are still on the board.
Ideally you'd have the same 5 players from start to end, but its not really necessary. My game group is typically the same 3 dudes with a few others that come and go. Even the ones that only get to play a few times really seem to enjoy it.
