Part of what I like about the game is the thematic decks and their mechanical distinctiveness (also the art is great). Depicting characters in ways contrary to their lore would hurt some of this, imo.Superman, even golden age superman, is a flying, superfast, nigh-invulnerable wrecking ball, with supersenses and ranged blasting powers. I just can't believably picture the likes of Robin Hood, Muldoon, Little Red Riding Hood, the Invisible Man, etc... as credible opponents for him. He would need to either be waaay overpowered as a playable character; or do a complete 180 on his build and destroy immersion.
Same for Hulk. Even Joe Fixit is nigh invulnerable and could throw a 40 ton subway car with relative ease. (Maybe his first comic, gray hulk incarnation would be an appropriate opponent).
My idea is that they should introduce "mega" characters. Essentially, large characters like King Kong, Optimus Prime, a Cyclops, etc... would be giants and you would need a team of heroes to take them out. Essentially if they introduce a point system (similar to Heroscape) then you could give characters point values and maybe Superman would be equal to 3 or 4 "regular" characters.
I've also wondered about perhaps making the game a squad based tactical combat game. It would need a larger board and you could have 3 or 4 heroes squaring off against each other. There would be terrain effects (like the elevation in the newest set , or doors in the Beowulf set) and possibly generic "supply cache" locations where you could pick up extra cards to add to your deck. You would activate 2 heroes per turn. The hurdle is that the exhaustion mechanic is kind of restrictive and can both be very punishing and/or abused. This is why I thought of the supply cache idea and you only activate 2 heroes per turn. Essentially you'd need to prioritize going for specific terrain advantaged areas or supply caches, and you'd have to juggle your characters and figure out how to parcel out your cards(and subsequent exhaustion). Naturally, it would need a bigger board, and you'd need to use opaque sleeves for all your card backs (as you'd be adding supply cache cards to the deck).
With a tactical game of 4v4, perhaps Superman could be a 3 or 4 point character and take on the whole team.
